Getting a UK second opinion on a Turkish treatment plan
A second pair of eyes on your plan is cheap insurance before an expensive, hard-to-undo treatment.
Ask a UK dentist to look at your Turkish treatment plan together with your X-rays before you book. Many will see you for a private examination and give a view. Send the itemised plan, your X-rays or scans, and the questions you are unsure about. If the two dentists disagree, ask each to explain their reasoning in writing, and consider a third opinion before you go ahead.
A treatment plan from a Turkish clinic often arrives quickly, sometimes within a day of sending photos. Before you commit, especially to implants, many crowns or full-arch treatment, a UK dentist’s view can be very useful.
Why a second opinion helps
- It checks whether the diagnosis makes sense: are those teeth really unsaveable?
- It may suggest options the first plan did not mention.
- It flags health issues to deal with first, such as gum disease.
- It gives you a UK dentist who knows your mouth before treatment, which helps with aftercare.
How to ask
Book a private examination with a UK dentist and say up front that you want an opinion on a treatment plan from abroad. Bring or send:
- The itemised plan, tooth by tooth.
- Your X-rays or 3D scan, or let the UK dentist take new ones.
- The names and titles of the Turkish dentists.
- Your questions, written down.
Good questions to ask the UK dentist
- Do you agree with the diagnosis?
- Which teeth would you try to keep?
- Are there risks in my health or mouth the plan does not mention?
- Would you be willing to see me for check-ups afterwards?
When two dentists disagree
Disagreement is common, and it does not mean one dentist is dishonest. Dentists weigh trade-offs differently. Ask each to explain their reasons in writing, and compare. If the gap is large, for example one plan removes eight teeth and the other removes none, consider a third opinion, or ask the Turkish dentist to discuss the UK dentist’s view on a video call.
Be fair to both sides
UK dentists are sometimes sceptical of treatment abroad, often because they see the cases that went wrong. Turkish clinics sometimes recommend more treatment than a UK dentist would. A second opinion is most useful when you treat both views as information, not verdicts.
When a second opinion is especially worth it
- The plan removes teeth that do not hurt and are not loose.
- The plan crowns many healthy front teeth.
- You have gum disease, diabetes, take bone medicines or smoke.
- The plan was made from photos without an X-ray.
- You feel rushed or unsure.
What it might cost
A private examination in the UK usually costs much less than the treatment you are considering abroad, and may include X-rays. Ask the practice for the price when you book. If you are an NHS patient, your dentist may be able to examine you and take an X-ray as part of NHS care, but an opinion on a private plan from abroad is not always something they will provide.
Sharing the result with the Turkish clinic
If the UK dentist raises a concern, send it to the Turkish dentist and ask for a written reply. A good dentist will engage with it: explain why they disagree, or adjust the plan. Either response is useful. A dismissive reply is itself information.
Building a relationship for afterwards
A UK dentist who has seen you before treatment is better placed to look after you afterwards. Even if they do not agree with every part of the plan, keeping them informed makes aftercare easier. See finding a UK dentist after treatment.
What to put in front of the UK dentist
A second opinion is only as good as what you bring. A one-line quote (“16 implants, both jaws”) is hard to comment on. A useful pack contains:
- The written plan, tooth by tooth, with what is planned for each.
- The X-rays or 3D scan the Turkish clinic used, or your own recent ones.
- The implant system, crown material and number of trips.
- Your medical history and medicines.
- The names and register titles of the dentists involved.
A worked example of a useful disagreement
Imagine a plan that removes all your remaining upper teeth for a full-arch bridge. Your UK dentist looks at the X-ray and says two of the front teeth have good bone and could be kept, with a smaller bridge or partial denture. Neither dentist is necessarily wrong. A full-arch bridge gives a predictable, fixed result; keeping teeth saves tissue but may need more maintenance. The right answer depends on your priorities, your budget and the long-term outlook for those teeth. A second opinion gives you that choice, rather than one option presented as the only one.
What NHS dentists can and cannot do
NHS dental care covers treatment that is clinically necessary. The NHS explains that Band 3 charges can include crowns, bridges and dentures. An NHS dentist can examine you and take X-rays as part of NHS care, but may not be able to give a detailed opinion on a private plan from abroad within an NHS appointment. A private examination is usually the simpler route. Finding an NHS dentist can take time; the NHS page on how to find an NHS dentist explains the process.
Turning the opinion into questions for Türkiye
Write the UK dentist’s concerns as questions and send them to the Turkish dentist. For example:
- “My UK dentist thinks the upper left canine could be kept. Why do you recommend removing it?”
- “My UK dentist recommends treating my gums before implants. Do you agree?”
- “Could the plan use fewer crowns and more veneers?”
Then compare the answers. Our video-call checklist has more, and our speciality pages can help if the second opinion suggests you need a specialist.
Second opinions in Türkiye, too
A second opinion does not have to come from the UK. If you are choosing between Turkish clinics, sending the same X-ray to two or three dentists is itself a form of second opinion. Use our ranking and speciality pages to pick dentists with relevant training, ask each the same questions and compare their reasoning. If two dentists in different cities suggest similar plans, that is reassuring. If they differ widely, ask each to explain.
Questions to ask yourself afterwards
- Do I understand why each dentist recommended what they did?
- Which plan keeps more of my own teeth, and does that matter to me?
- Which plan can I realistically look after at home?
- Which dentist answered my questions most clearly?
- Do I feel pressured by any of them?
Keep the opinion on file
Whatever you decide, keep the UK dentist’s notes and X-rays. If anything goes wrong later, they show what your mouth was like before treatment, which can help with guarantee claims and with your future care at home.
Your next steps
- Ask the Turkish clinic for a written, tooth-by-tooth plan and the X-rays it used.
- Book a private examination with a UK dentist and say you would like an opinion on the plan.
- Take your questions and the pack described above.
- Turn the UK dentist’s comments into questions for the Turkish dentist.
- Compare the answers and decide, without pressure.
A second opinion rarely takes more than a week or two to arrange. For treatment that removes teeth or changes your whole smile, that is a small delay set against a decision you will live with for many years.
Our view
Precious Dental publishes this guide. You can ask our dentists to explain their reasoning to you or to your UK dentist, as you can with any clinic. Check any Turkish dentist, including ours, using our checklist.
Common questions
Will a UK dentist give an opinion on a Turkish plan?
Many will, usually as a paid private examination. Some prefer not to comment on another dentist’s plan.
What should I send?
The itemised plan, your recent X-rays or scans, and a list of your questions.
What if the UK dentist says I need less treatment?
Ask both dentists to explain why. Less treatment is not always right, but it deserves a clear reason.
Will this offend the Turkish clinic?
A good clinic will not mind. Second opinions are normal for big treatments.
