Choosing a city

Istanbul or Antalya: which is better for your dentist?

The two cities most UK patients compare. Both have excellent dentists. The practical differences are bigger than the clinical ones.

Short answer

Istanbul offers the widest choice of dentists and specialists, but its airports are far from many clinics and getting around takes time. Antalya has year-round UK flights, a short airport transfer and many clinics set up for two-trip implant treatment, with a calmer place to recover. Choose the dentist first, then check the city works for every trip your plan needs.

When UK patients narrow down Türkiye, they usually end up choosing between Istanbul and Antalya. We are based in Antalya, so we are not neutral, and we say so. Here is our honest view of where each city is stronger.

Choice of dentists

Istanbul is a city of about sixteen million people with several large university dental faculties. It has more dentists, and more specialists, than anywhere else in Türkiye. If you need an unusual specialist, for example for complex jaw surgery, Istanbul gives you the widest choice.

Antalya is smaller but has a large number of clinics set up for international patients, many focused on implants, full-arch treatment and veneers. For the treatments most UK patients travel for, the choice is ample.

Getting there and getting around

Istanbul has two airports, Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), and both can be an hour or more from the clinic districts depending on traffic. Daily trips between hotel and clinic can also take time. Choose a hotel close to the clinic.

Antalya Airport (AYT) is about 20 to 30 minutes from the city centre. Clinics and hotels are close together, and many clinics arrange transfers.

Flights from the UK

Both cities have flights from the UK all year. Antalya has more routes from regional UK airports in summer and fewer in winter; Istanbul has frequent flights from the larger UK airports throughout the year. Check flights from your nearest airport for the months of both your trips.

Recovering after surgery

After implant surgery you need a few quiet days. Antalya’s seafront and slower pace suit that well. Istanbul is wonderful for sightseeing, which is better saved for before surgery or for a later trip.

The second trip

For implant and full-arch treatment, the second trip often falls in autumn or winter. Antalya is quieter and hotels are cheaper then, and clinics run all year. In Istanbul, winter is cold and wet but clinics work normally. See planning a winter dental trip.

Where to stay

In Istanbul, staying near the clinic matters more than staying near the sights. Traffic across the city can turn a short distance into a long journey, especially at rush hour, and you may have appointments on several days. Ask the clinic which hotels its patients use and how long the journey takes.

In Antalya, many clinics are in or near the city centre and the Lara and Konyaaltı areas, with hotels a short drive away. Some packages include the hotel and transfers. Ask exactly which hotel and for how many nights.

Costs beyond the dentistry

Flights to Istanbul from major UK airports can be competitive all year. Flights to Antalya are often cheaper in winter and busier in school holidays. Hotels in Istanbul’s central districts can be expensive; Antalya hotels are cheaper outside summer. Add transfers, meals and a spare day to any comparison. Compare written, itemised quotes; prices differ more between clinics than between cities.

If you need a specialist

If your dentist recommends a specialist you cannot find in Antalya, such as a surgeon for very complex jaw reconstruction, Istanbul’s university hospitals and large clinics are a good place to look. For most implant, full-arch, crown and veneer treatment, both cities have plenty of experienced dentists.

Questions to settle the choice

  1. Which dentist do I want, and where do they work?
  2. Which UK airport will I fly from, and what flights run in the months of both trips?
  3. How far is the hotel from the clinic?
  4. Do I want sightseeing or quiet recovery?

Dentists we have checked in each city

In Istanbul, we list specialists at Dentistanbul Dental Hospital in Beşiktaş, including dentists registered in prosthodontics, oral surgery and periodontology. See our Istanbul page. In Antalya, our top pick, Dt. Hüseyin Yavuz Özbek, works at Precious Dental, which publishes this guide; for a wider comparison of Antalya clinics, see bestdentistsinantalya.com.

Health cover and safety

GOV.UK’s Turkey health advice says the EHIC and GHIC are not valid in Türkiye, so travel insurance matters wherever you go. The same page has a section on medical tourism, noting that standards of medical facilities can vary widely and pointing travellers to further advice. Read it before you book, whichever city you choose.

A practical decision checklist

  • Which city does my chosen dentist work in?
  • Can I fly there from my nearest UK airport in the months of both trips?
  • How long is the transfer, and is it included?
  • Is the hotel close to the clinic?
  • Do I want quiet recovery or a city break?
  • If something goes wrong between trips, how easily can I get back?

When Istanbul is clearly the better choice

If you need a particular specialist who works in Istanbul, or you want to combine treatment with time in the city, Istanbul makes sense. Its size also means more choice if you want a second opinion locally. Choose a hotel near the clinic and keep sightseeing for before surgery.

When Antalya is clearly the better choice

If your plan is implants or full-arch treatment with two trips, and you want a short transfer and a calm place to recover, Antalya is often simpler. That is our view as an Antalya clinic, so weigh it accordingly and check the practicalities yourself.

A worked example: the same plan in two cities

Take a patient from Bristol who needs full-arch treatment in the upper jaw. In Istanbul they would fly into one of two airports, transfer for an hour or more, stay near the clinic and have a city to explore before surgery. In Antalya they would transfer for around half an hour and recover by the sea. The dentistry could be equally good in both. The difference is the travel on two trips, and what the patient wants from the days in between. Writing those down usually makes the decision clear.

Questions to ask clinics in either city

  • Which dentist will treat me, and are they on the HealthTürkiye register at your clinic?
  • Where will I stay, and how long is the journey to the clinic?
  • Are transfers included for every appointment?
  • What happens if my flight is delayed?
  • Who do I contact after I get home?

Use our checking guide on whichever dentist you choose.

Your next steps

  1. Shortlist dentists in both cities using our ranking and Istanbul page.
  2. Check flights from your nearest UK airport to both cities for each likely month.
  3. Ask each clinic about hotels and transfer times.
  4. Decide on the dentist first, then confirm the city works for both trips.

Both cities can give you an excellent result; the right one is the one that fits your dentist and your travel.

Common questions

Are dentists better in Istanbul than Antalya?

Not as a rule. Istanbul has more dentists, including more specialists. Judge the individual dentist, not the city.

Which is easier for a second trip?

Antalya, for most UK patients, because of year-round flights and a short airport transfer.

Is Istanbul cheaper?

Prices vary more by clinic than by city. Compare written, itemised plans.

Can I combine sightseeing with treatment?

Yes, in both, but plan rest days after surgery.
