Planning a dental trip to Türkiye in winter

If your implants go in during the summer, your final teeth may be fitted in winter. Plan for that from the start.

Short answer

For two-trip treatment, check before you book that flights, the clinic and your dentist will all be available in winter. Istanbul and Antalya have UK flights all year; the Aegean resorts rely mostly on summer flights. Winter brings quieter clinics and cheaper hotels, but allow for weather delays and bring warm clothes: Istanbul in particular is cold and wet.

Most UK patients first visit Türkiye for dental treatment in spring or summer. For implants, the second trip usually follows three to six months later, which can put it in late autumn or winter. Planning for that from the beginning avoids a lot of stress.

Flights

Istanbul and Antalya have flights from the UK all year, though Antalya has fewer routes from regional airports in winter. Dalaman and Bodrum, which serve Fethiye, Marmaris and Bodrum, rely mostly on summer flights. Before you book your first trip, check flights for the months your second trip might fall in. See our city guide.

Clinics and dentists

City clinics work normally all year. Some resort clinics reduce hours or staff in the off-season. Ask the clinic, and ask whether your dentist will be working in the weeks you are likely to return. See the same dentist on trip two.

Turkish holidays

Clinics may close or run reduced hours for public holidays and the two religious festivals, whose dates move each year. Ask before booking flights.

The advantages of winter

  • Clinics are less busy, so appointments can be more flexible.
  • Hotels are cheaper and quieter.
  • Cooler weather can make the days after treatment more comfortable.

What to pack and plan

  • Warm, waterproof clothes, especially for Istanbul.
  • Your records from the first trip: scans, implant details and plan.
  • A spare day in case of flight delays.
  • Travel insurance that covers your trip; GOV.UK advises travellers to have appropriate insurance.

Weather and comfort

Antalya’s winters are mild by UK standards, with sunny days and cooler nights, but also heavy rain at times. Istanbul is cold and often wet, with occasional snow. Izmir and the Aegean coast sit somewhere in between. None of this affects the dentistry, but it affects how comfortable you are walking between hotel and clinic with a sore mouth. Bring layers, a waterproof and comfortable shoes.

Booking the second trip early

Ask your dentist at the end of your first trip how many weeks they need before the final stage, and book a provisional date. Clinics are often more flexible in winter, but some dentists take holidays then too. Booking early also lets you catch cheaper flights.

If your flight is cancelled

Winter brings occasional weather delays. If your flight is cancelled, tell the clinic straight away. A good clinic will rearrange appointments. Travelling a day early, if your budget allows, gives you a buffer.

Healing and timing

The time needed between implant placement and the final teeth depends on your bone and the type of implant, not on the season. Do not shorten the interval to fit a cheap flight. Your dentist should tell you the minimum time they need, and you can plan around that.

A month-by-month way to plan two trips

If you are planning implant treatment, it helps to sketch both trips on a calendar before you book anything. Your dentist will tell you the usual healing time for your case. Working from that, the pattern looks like this:

An example only. Your dentist decides the interval.

Two things stand out. First, a summer first trip often puts the second in late autumn or winter. Second, if you are choosing a resort that relies on summer flights, a first trip in early spring gives you the best chance of both visits falling in the flying season.

Travel insurance and the GHIC

GOV.UK’s Turkey travel advice says that the European Health Insurance Card and the Global Health Insurance Card are not valid in Türkiye. That means you need travel insurance for medical problems on the trip. GOV.UK’s guidance on foreign travel insurance explains what to look for. Many standard policies exclude planned treatment abroad and its complications, so read the wording and ask your insurer directly. Tell them about any existing health conditions, too.

What your clinic should give you before a winter trip

  • Confirmed appointment dates, with the dentist’s name for each.
  • The hotel, how far it is from the clinic and whether transfers are included.
  • Opening days around public and religious holidays in your travel window.
  • A phone or WhatsApp number that will be answered if your flight is delayed.
  • What to do if you arrive unwell, for example with a cold that would make surgery unwise.

When winter is the better choice

For some patients a winter first trip is ideal: clinics are quieter, appointments are easier to move, hotels cost less and the heat of a Turkish summer is not an issue on the days after surgery. If you are flexible, ask the clinic whether starting in the cooler months would suit your plan. In Antalya and Istanbul that is usually straightforward; in the resorts, check the clinic’s winter hours first. Our coast dentists page lists the resort clinics we have checked.

Coming home in winter

If you have surgery shortly before you fly home in winter, expect UK weather and a long journey with a tender mouth. Pack soft snacks and water for the flight, keep your medicines in your hand luggage, and have your UK dentist’s details ready in case you need them in the first days. See finding a UK dentist after treatment.

A worked example: planning around a winter second trip

Take a patient who has implants placed in Antalya in mid-August. Their dentist wants at least three months before the final teeth. That puts the second trip from mid-November. They check flights from their nearest UK airport: there are fewer routes than in summer but still options, some via another airport. They book a provisional second trip for late November, avoiding any public holiday dates the clinic mentions, and add a spare day at the end. They ask the clinic to confirm in writing which dentist will fit the final teeth. If the dentist needs more time, they move the trip into December rather than rushing.

Weather-proofing your plan

  • Choose a hotel within a short drive or walk of the clinic.
  • Keep appointments in the morning where possible, in case of afternoon weather delays.
  • Carry your records and medicines in hand luggage.
  • Have the clinic’s out-of-hours number saved on your phone.

Dentists in year-round cities

If a winter trip worries you, look at dentists in cities with year-round UK flights. Our Istanbul page lists specialists we have checked there; our top pick, Dt. Hüseyin Yavuz Özbek, works in Antalya.

Your next steps

  1. Ask your dentist for the minimum interval between your trips.
  2. Check winter flights from your nearest airport for the likely months.
  3. Ask the clinic about winter opening and holiday closures.
  4. Book a provisional second trip with a spare day.
  5. Arrange travel insurance that covers Türkiye.

Planned early, a winter second trip is often calmer than a summer one: quieter clinics, cheaper hotels and cooler days for recovery.

Book the provisional dates as soon as your first trip ends.

Milder than the UK, but cooler and wetter than summer. Bring layers.
