Will the same dentist see you on your second trip?
Months pass between placing implants and fitting the final teeth. Dentists move on. Here is how to protect continuity.
Implant treatment usually needs two trips three to six months apart. Ideally the dentist who placed your implants, or the one who planned your teeth, sees you on the second trip. Ask before you book who will see you each time, what happens if that dentist leaves, and make sure your records (scans, implant brand, plan) are given to you in writing after the first trip.
For most implant treatment in Türkiye, you travel twice. On the first trip, failing teeth are removed and implants are placed, often with temporary teeth. You go home while the implants join the bone. Three to six months later you return for the final teeth. That gap is long enough for a lot to change at a clinic.
Why continuity matters
The dentist who placed your implants knows how the surgery went: the quality of your bone, any grafts, any implant that was less stable than hoped. The dentist who planned your teeth knows what shape and bite they were aiming for. If someone new sees you on the second trip, they start from your records, not from memory. Good records make that workable. Poor records make it risky.
What to ask before you book
- Who will see me on the first trip, and who on the second?
- If that dentist is not available, who will take over, and what is their title?
- Will I be given copies of my scans and the implant details?
- Can I book my second trip dates now?
What to take home after the first trip
- Your X-rays and 3D scan (CBCT), digitally.
- The implant brand, system, sizes and positions.
- Any graft materials used.
- A written plan for the second stage, with the material of the final teeth.
- Instructions for caring for your temporary teeth.
- The names of the dentists who treated you.
Keep these safe. If you need a UK dentist in between trips, they will need them too. See finding a UK dentist after treatment.
Choose a city you can get back to
Your second trip may fall in winter. Some coastal resorts have fewer flights and quieter clinics outside the summer. Antalya and Istanbul have UK flights all year. Our city guide compares them, and our article on winter trips goes into more detail.
If something changes in between
If a temporary tooth breaks, you have pain or an implant feels loose between trips, contact the clinic straight away and send photos. Ask whether you should see a UK dentist, and what the clinic will cover.
What happens on the second trip
A typical second trip for implants lasts about a week. The dentist checks that the implants have joined the bone, takes impressions or digital scans for the final teeth, may try in a test version to check the bite and appearance, and then fits the final crowns or bridge. There may be a few days between appointments while the laboratory works. Leave a spare day for adjustments.
Questions to ask on the second trip
- Have all the implants healed well?
- Can I see the final teeth before they are fixed?
- What material are they, and how do I clean under them?
- How often should a dentist check them?
- What does the guarantee cover from now on?
If a different dentist sees you
Sometimes a change is unavoidable. If so, ask the new dentist to review your records with you at the start, look them up on HealthTürkiye, and ask whether the original dentist is available to consult. Good clinics handle this smoothly.
Between trips: the months at home
The time between trips is not idle. Your implants are joining the bone, and how you look after your temporary teeth matters. Most clinics give advice along these lines; follow your own dentist’s instructions where they differ:
- Eat softer food at first and avoid biting hard things with the temporaries.
- Keep the area clean, gently, as shown at the clinic.
- Do not smoke; it slows healing.
- Report pain that is getting worse, swelling, pus, a bad taste or a temporary tooth that moves.
The NHS describes the signs of a dental abscess, such as throbbing pain, swelling and fever. If you notice these, get help promptly: contact your Turkish clinic with photos and see a UK dentist, or call NHS 111 out of hours.
Agreeing continuity in writing
A short paragraph in your treatment plan can prevent a lot of worry later. Ask the clinic to write something like: “Dr X will place the implants. Dr X or Dr Y will fit the final bridge. If neither is available, the clinic will tell you in advance and you may rearrange your dates.” Few clinics will refuse a reasonable request like this.
Checking the second dentist
If someone new will fit your final teeth, look them up in the same way as the first: on HealthTürkiye and on the clinic’s website. For full-arch bridges, a dentist with a prosthodontics branch or published prosthetic work is a good fit for the second stage. Our prosthodontists page lists some we have checked.
What to bring back on the second trip
- All the records from your first trip.
- Notes of anything that happened in between: discomfort, broken temporaries, medicines you started.
- A list of what you want from the final teeth: shape, shade, how they feel when you speak.
- Photos of your own smile from before you lost teeth, if you have them, to help with the design.
If the second trip cannot happen
Sometimes illness or circumstances stop people returning. Ask at the start what the options would be: could a UK dentist complete the final teeth using your records and the implant system details? Some will; many will not take on work planned elsewhere. Knowing the answer before you begin helps you decide. Our article on UK aftercare covers what to keep.
A worked example: when the plan changes on trip two
Sometimes a dentist finds on the second trip that one implant has not healed well. A good clinic will explain the options: removing it and letting the site heal, placing another implant, or adjusting the bridge design. This can mean an extra trip. Ask at the start how such situations are handled and who pays, so that you are not deciding under pressure on the day.
Signs of good continuity
- The clinic gives you a provisional second-trip date before you leave.
- Your notes from trip one are ready when you arrive for trip two.
- The same coordinator and, ideally, the same dentist greet you.
- You are shown your healed implants on a new X-ray before work starts.
Your next steps
- Before booking, ask who will see you on each trip, and get the answer in writing.
- Agree a provisional window for the second trip and check flights for those months.
- At the end of trip one, collect your scans, implant details and the written plan for stage two.
- Between trips, look after your temporary teeth and report any problem promptly with photos.
- A week before trip two, confirm the dentist and appointment times with the clinic.
- On trip two, ask to see your new X-ray and the planned final teeth before anything is fixed in place.
If the dentist who placed your implants is no longer available, look up the new one on HealthTürkiye before your appointment.
Continuity is easy to arrange at the start and hard to fix later.
Our top pick
Precious Dental publishes this guide. Our top pick, Dt. Hüseyin Yavuz Özbek, works on both implant surgery and prosthetics, so he can be involved in both stages. Ask us, and any other clinic, to confirm in writing who will see you on each trip.
Common questions
Why does the second trip matter so much?
That is when your final teeth are made and fitted. The bite, shape and fit depend on decisions made then.
What if my dentist has left the clinic?
Ask the clinic who will take over, and look them up. Your records should let any competent dentist continue.
Should I get copies of my scans?
Yes. Ask for your X-rays, 3D scan and the implant details (brand, system, sizes) after the first trip.
Can I have the second stage in the UK?
Sometimes, but many UK dentists are reluctant to finish treatment started elsewhere. Agree it in advance.
