Implants

How many implants has your dentist placed?

An awkward question that most good dentists are happy to answer. Here is how to ask it, and what to listen for.

Short answer

Ask the dentist who will place your implants roughly how many they place in a typical month, how many full-arch cases they have done, how many years they have been placing implants, and what they do when an implant fails. Good dentists give specific approximate answers. Clinic-wide totals (“50,000 implants”) tell you about the business, not about your dentist.

When you are about to have surgery, it is natural to wonder how experienced the surgeon is. With implants abroad, many patients do not ask, either because it feels rude or because the clinic’s website is full of large numbers that seem to answer the question. They usually do not.

Why clinic numbers do not help

“Over 30,000 implants placed” is a total for the whole clinic, possibly across several branches and many years. It tells you the clinic is busy. It does not tell you how many of those implants were placed by the dentist who will treat you.

Questions that get useful answers

  1. Roughly how many implants do you place in a typical month? A specific range (“around forty”) is more useful than “many”.
  2. How long have you been placing implants? Compare with the graduation year on their profile.
  3. How many full-arch cases have you done? If you need All-on-4 or All-on-6, this matters more than single implants. See All-on-6 dentists.
  4. Which implant systems do you use most? Dentists who use one or two systems every day tend to know them well.
  5. When an implant fails, what do you do? Every implant dentist has had failures. Listen for a clear, unembarrassed process.

What good answers sound like

Good answers are specific but modest. “I place implants most days; I’ve done several hundred full-arch cases; when one doesn’t integrate we remove it, let the site heal and place another” is the kind of answer that inspires confidence. Evasion, irritation or a switch to talking about the clinic’s numbers is not.

Experience is not the only factor

An experienced dentist can still be the wrong choice if your case needs a specialist, or if the plan is rushed. Combine the experience question with the others in our video-call checklist, and check the dentist’s record on HealthTürkiye.

What the register shows

For many dentists, HealthTürkiye shows a number of years’ experience. We show it on every dentist’s profile in this guide. It is a useful starting point, but it measures time, not implants.

Experience with your kind of case

Total numbers matter less than experience with cases like yours. Someone who has placed thousands of single implants in healthy bone may have done few full-arch cases, or few in very thin bone. Describe your situation and ask: “How often do you treat someone like me?” Typical examples worth mentioning:

  • You wear a full denture and want fixed teeth.
  • You have lost bone after years without teeth.
  • You have had gum disease.
  • You take medicines that affect bone or bleeding.
  • You have had implants fail before.

What failure means, and why the question matters

Some implants do not join the bone, and some develop problems later. Every experienced implant dentist has seen this. The useful question is not “do your implants fail?” but “what happens when one does?” A good answer covers how it is detected, what is done (often removing the implant, letting the site heal and placing another), and who pays. Ask for the clinic’s policy in writing.

Supervised and shared cases

In teaching clinics and large practices, junior dentists may place implants under supervision. That is a normal way to learn. You are entitled to know if it applies to you. Ask: “Will you personally place my implants, or will you supervise someone else?”

A message you can copy

“Thank you for the plan. Before I decide, could Dr ___ tell me roughly how many implants they place in a typical month, how many full-arch cases they have done in the last year, and which implant system they use most often? I would also like to know what happens if one of my implants does not heal.”

Polite, specific questions like these usually get specific answers. If the reply only repeats the clinic’s overall numbers, ask again for the dentist’s own.

AnswerWhat it suggests
A rough monthly figure and a clear failure processA dentist who does this regularly and has thought about problems
“Thousands” with no detailPossibly clinic-wide figures; ask again
“Our implants never fail”Not realistic; every implant dentist sees some failures
No answer, or irritationA warning sign

Years on the register versus implant experience

HealthTürkiye shows years of experience for many dentists, and we show it on every profile. For example, Dt. Ömer Murat Saraç in Kuşadası is shown with 29 years and Uzm. Dt. Rouzbeh Fazeli in Izmir with 11; Rouzbeh Fazeli’s clinic profile lists implant work in complex cases and full-arch treatment. Years tell you how long someone has practised. They do not tell you what share of that time was spent on implants. Ask.

How experience interacts with your case

  • Straightforward single implants in good bone: many experienced general dentists are well placed.
  • Several implants with grafting: look for surgical or periodontal training, or a dentist who does grafts often.
  • Full-arch treatment: look for regular full-arch experience and good prosthetic planning.
  • A history of failed implants or medical complications: a specialist opinion is worth having.

Our implant dentists page lists dentists whose branch or published work includes implants.

Ask about the team, too

Implant surgery depends on the people around the dentist: the assistant, the person giving sedation, the technician making the teeth. Ask who will be in the room, and whether the laboratory is in the clinic. A well-organised team is part of experience.

Clinic numbers that are useful

Some clinic-level numbers can help, if you ask for them in the right way. For example: how many full-arch cases does the clinic do a month, how many dentists place implants there, and how long has the clinic been placing them? The HealthTürkiye register shows when each clinic was founded; in this guide, founding years range from 2016 to 2023 for the clinics we checked. A clinic founded recently may still have very experienced dentists who worked elsewhere before; ask.

Experience and second opinions

If two experienced dentists give you different plans, that is not a sign that one is inexperienced. Dentists weigh trade-offs differently. Ask each to explain their reasons. Our article on second opinions explains how to compare them.

Write the answers down

Keep a note of what each dentist told you about their experience. If you go ahead, you have a record of what you were told when you chose them, which can matter if something goes wrong later.

Your next steps

  1. Send the message above to the dentist who would place your implants.
  2. Note their answers alongside their HealthTürkiye record and clinic profile.
  3. Ask the same questions of at least one other dentist.
  4. Choose the dentist whose experience best matches your particular case.

Keep in mind that a dentist who is honest about their numbers, including the cases that did not go to plan, is usually a safer choice than one who offers only reassurance. Confidence should come with detail, and detail is something you can check against their profile and register entry.

Our top pick

Precious Dental publishes this guide. Our implant surgeon, Dt. Hüseyin Yavuz Özbek, is shown on the register with seven years’ experience, and his work is focused on implant surgery and prosthetics. If you are considering us, ask him the same questions. His record is on his profile page.

Common questions

Is there a minimum number of implants a dentist should have placed?

There is no official threshold. Experience with cases like yours is what matters.

What is a good failure rate?

Ask the dentist what their experience is, but treat any single figure with care: failure depends on patients, bone and follow-up, not just the dentist.

Is it rude to ask?

No. It is a normal question before surgery.

Does the HealthTürkiye register show experience?

It shows years of experience for many dentists. It does not show how many implants they have placed.
